Services

Counselling on all contraception options available in Canada 

  • Start and refill for the birth control pill, birth control patch (e.g. Evra), contraceptive ring (e.g. Nuvaring), injectable (e.g. Depo provera) and emergency contraception.  

  • Hormonal (Mirena and Kyleena) and non-hormonal (Copper) IUD insertion and removal (intra-cervical blocks for pain management with IUD insertions).

  • Single rod hormonal implant (Nexplanon)  insertion and removal.

  • Emergency contraception. (including Plan B, Ella, Copper IUD)

 FAQs

  • We offer several options to help manage pain and anxiety during IUD insertion and make the procedure as comfortable as possible. We recommend booking a consultation prior to your procedure to discuss which options may be best for you.

    Pain relief options include:

    • A prescription for anti-inflammatory medication (e.g. naproxen)

    • An intra-cervical lidocaine block (a local anesthetic injection to numb the cervix)

    • A prescription for inhaled analgesia, Penthrox. Penthrox is fast-acting and inhaled through a handheld device during the procedure. It can help reduce pain and procedural anxiety without complete sedation. Penthrox is not suitable for everyone; we will review your medical history to confirm whether this option is appropriate. You should not drive after using Penthrox and must arrange transportation home.

    Anxiety management:

    • If you are feeling anxious about the procedure, we can prescribe an anti-anxiety medication (e.g. Ativan) to be taken approximately one hour before your appointment. This medication may cause drowsiness or lightheadedness, so you will need someone to accompany you to and from the clinic.

    Misoprostol:

    • We do not routinely prescribe misoprostol prior to IUD insertion due to limited evidence of benefit.

    • In select cases, it may be considered on an individual basis after discussion with your clinician.

  • We feel comfortable inserting an IUD any time during your cycle as long as we are confident you are not pregnant. The cervix is most open during your period so it might helpful to schedule the appointment at that time.

    If you are not coming on your period, we might need to complete urine pregnancy test at the time if the appointment. No unprotected sexual intercourse at least 2 weeks before the appointment. If you are using birth control pills, please continue using this up until the day of insertion and for 7 days after the insertion.

    If you have an IUD in place, we recommend using condoms 7 days before the IUD replacement appointment.

    Please make sure to bring the IUD device with you if you are booked for the insertion.

  • We can remove the IUD at any point during your cycle. If you have an appointment for an IUD removal and pregnancy is not desired, please use a back contraception method (such as condoms) for 7 days prior to getting your IUD removed to avoid any chance of unplanned pregnancy.

  • We do not sell IUDs or arm implants in our clinic. We will provide a prescription and you can purchase it at any pharmacy. You will need to bring the device to your appointment.

  • During your appointment, we will spend ample time reviewing all options available to you in Canada.

  • Sometimes it might be difficult to stay on schedule when taking hormonal method of contraception. If you have missed a dose or forgot to take your birth control method on time, there may be measures you can take to reduce your risk of pregnancy.We suggest referring to this guide after a missed or extended dose:
