About BOTOX® Cosmetic.
BOTOX Cosmetic is also referred to as a botulinum toxin A . It is a purified protein and neurotoxin complex that when injected directly into the muscle will cause relaxation.
Produced in a controlled laboratory setting from the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum , BOTOX® works by blocking the chemical signal that allows for nerve impulses to be sent to the muscle and cause movement. Wrinkles are formed by repetitive creasing in the skin, from the facial expressions that we make on a daily basis. Over time these wrinkles can become large and deep. BOTOX COSMETIC® works by relaxing these muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, so the skin is given a chance to smooth out naturally. It can be used as a preventative and corrective measure to improve the look of moderate to severe facial lines
Currently BOTOX COSMETIC® is indicated for the treatment of:
frown lines (glabellar lines)
upper facial wrinkles, (including forehead, lateral canthus),
crows feet (lateral canthal lines).
How does BOTOX® COSMETIC work?
Over time we all develop habitual facial expressions that form lines and then wrinkles in our skin. Some examples are a furrowed brow, squinted eyes, or unconscious frowning.
These actions are considered minor when thought of as a one time gesture because skin, especially when young, is elastic in nature; however, like water flowing through a canyon, over time these gestures cause expressions to become wrinkles, and the elasticity to fade, resulting in permanent features of the face that we associate with advancing age.
When treated with botox, a tiny amount of the product is injected into one or more of the dozens of muscles that control facial expression. The botox works to relax the muscle by blocking the nerve impulse from reaching that specific area, causing the muscle to relax and the wrinkle to fade. Over time the treated muscles can "learn" not to make the facial expression that caused the wrinkle, resulting in long lasting effect.
What is the cost of BOTOX® COSMETIC?
BOTOX COSMETIC ® cost is measured by the unit. At WellOne Medical Centre we charge $10 per unit of BOTOX. The number of units is based on the area that you want treated. A free consultation with the doctor will provide you with the exact price of your injection.
What to expect from your BOTOX® COSMETIC Treatment?
A common misconception is that BOTOX COSMETIC® will eradicate facial expression and movements all together. The goal of a treatment is to soften facial lines, while still providing patients with a natural appearance.
During the consultation, the doctor will go through your medical history, find out what aesthetic kind of aesthetic results you’re wanting and also address any concerns you may have. From there it will be explained how many units you will need (the cost), any risks to treatment and what to expect following the injection.
The actual injection is performed with a very fine needle and only takes a few minutes, with little or no discomfort. There is a gradual weakening of the treated muscle, that after an injection, results can take up two (2) weeks to appear. Subsequent treatments will be needed approximately 3-6 months later to keep up the results as it is not permanent.
How is a BOTOX® COSMETIC injection performed?
Performed by Dr. Sarah Mahmoud, who has a vast knowledge of facial anatomy. In the consultation your health and medical history will be discussed, along with your goals for the outcome of the procedure. The areas that you are interested in treating will be assessed, and the details of the procedure along with any risks and aftercare will be discussed. The doctor will then perform a facial analysis to determine the exact injection areas for your anatomy. Your questions will be addressed and answered, and then if you want to move forth with the injection she can perform it at the same time as your consultation.
Before the procedure, photographs will be taken to have record for yourself so you can see the improvement that has occurred from the treatment. A consent form will be given to you, along with a brief health history to rule out any contraindications between the prescription injection and allergies or medical conditions that you may have.
BOTOX COSMETIC® comes in a clear glass vial in the form of a vacuum sealed powder. It will be diluted with a sterile, non-preserved 0.9% Sodium Chloride solution and the physician will draw it up into a syringe(s). The actual injection is performed by a very fine needle (a 31 gauge) so it is very tolerable. You may not even feel the prick of the needle! The use of a topical numbing agent can be applied before. A few pokes will be needed per area, all based on what areas is being injected. The actual injection will only take a few minutes.
